Most of us like to have some kind of pickle, chutney or papad along with our meals for that extra flavour. We do this without realizing that most of the pickles that are bought off the shelf are loaded with preservatives & oil.
Also most of the papads are difficult to digest – in fact, I had read somewhere that one single papad takes 8 hours to get digested and eliminated from our body. Moreover these add minimal nutritional value too.
I too, am very fond of pickles and papads but in an attempt to consume healthier foods, I have started preparing a green chutney which is quite tangy and tasty. This is a good alternative to pickle and moreover it is helps in digestion of food as well 🙂
1 bunch coriander thoroughly washed (Click here to know the best way to wash coriander)
10 to 12 garlic cloves
3 – 4 green chillies
1 tbs roasted jeera (cumin) powder
1 tbs oil
Salt to taste
Grind all the above ingredients together initially without adding water a couple of times and then adding water to get a thick consistency. Oil helps to maintain the fresh green colour of the chutney and this can be refrigerated for around 10 days.
Variations: You can add mint leaves, jaggery and/or ginger. Onions can be omitted as per your taste.
This chutney is very good for digestion since it contains garlic and coriander. It is a good source of iron and fiber too. Vitamin C from lemons is good for infections like tonsils, asthma and sore throat. Vitamin C is also a very good antioxidant.
