Some days ago TOI had the following headline on its front page – Indians have 30% weaker lungs than Europeans.. While reading this I realized that food which is good for the heart or low calorie foods receive a lot of attention. But I couldn’t recall more than a couple of things that would be good for our lungs. This led me to look up for the food good for our lungs and was surprised by what I found.

What we eat may not directly affect the lungs, but it does indirectly. A high fat diet has also been linked to a higher risk of developing lung cancer. On the other hand, eating fruits has been shown to lower these risks. Fresh, raw foods are the best way to get enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that will keep you breathing easy.

Water : Water is essential for healthy lungs, as dry lungs are more susceptible to irritation. It also keeps our lungs hydrated and the mucus flowing

Grapes : Grapes are good to cure and control respiratory ailments like asthma and bronchitis. Also a high diet in fresh grapes has shown to reduce the risk of lung cancer. Have discussed this in the article God’s Engineering as well.

Ginger : Ginger protects the lungs and the colon. Its healing qualities can transform, reduce, or expel phlegm in the lungs. It is also beneficial for throat inflammation and asthma, bronchitis and cough

Fatty Fish :A research review conducted by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reports suggests that fatty fish like Salmon, Tuna, Sardines, Mackerel containing omega-3 fats may prevent cancerous cell formation in the lungs

Cruciferous Vegetables – Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and kale have been shown to halt the progression of lung cancer and cut the risk of developing lung cancer in half. They are rich in chlorophyll that cleans and builds blood, and full of some very effective antioxidants

Carrots : Foods with vitamin A have been proven to be very beneficial for lung health and carrots are one of these sources of Vit A. Carrots also have lycopene, falcarinol, beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, all-powerful anti-cancer agents

Pomegranates – Pomegranate juice and extract slow the growth of lung tumors. Pomegranates contain many antioxidants including ellagic acid, which is gaining strides in cancer research.

Oranges – Citrus is rich in vitamin C and vitamin B6. Vitamin C is a very powerful antioxidant and helps the lungs heal from inside out. These also help the lungs transfer oxygen.

Also, correct breathing and exercising will further strengthen our lungs along with a proper diet.
